Moving To Las Vegas? My Family’s Story.

As recent California Transplants……we’d like to answer the question…….”Is Las Vegas A Good Place To Live?”

We moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to Las Vegas a little over one year ago.  In our relatively short time of living here, we’ve learned a lot of things.   We’ve broken down our views into categories that we believe most families consider as priorities.

Education System:

Just like most families, the first thing that they consider when moving their families from one place to another is the school system.  Nevada state schools are not highly regarded due to their lack of funding and the inability to keep up with a growing population which has created massive overcrowding.  The Nevada state legislature recently passed a bill increasing the funding for state schools.  For those who have considered sending their children to a private school, Nevada has some of the finest private schools in the country according to and they are comparable their counterparts in the Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay areas but cost much less.  The following heat maps from highlights the school districts from Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco and their relative national ratings at the high school level (grades 9 – 12).   You can draw your own conclusions.


Job Opportunities:

According to US News, Nevada ranks 3rd in the highest job growth in the country just behind Utah and Colorado respectively.  There are shortages in the technical, education and medical fields due the fact that the state’s population quadrupled between 1980 and 2010 according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Job opportunities and demand for qualified professionals will continue to rise.

Housing / Cost Of Living:

According to a latest Trulia housing report,  the average home sale price in Nevada is $ 222,000.00 versus its neighbor, California which comes in at $ 420,000.00.   The difference of almost $ 200,000.000 but the most significant factor is the difference in average household income….California’s household income has been in a steady decline since 2000 and Nevada’s household income has risen over the same period.  California’s average household income in 2014 was $67,458.00 and Nevada’s was $48,927.00.  Adding insult to injury…..according to the Tax Foundation…..California has a marginal income tax rate of 13.4% versus 0% for Nevada. California’s income tax has risen over the past decade while its average household income has declined…..this is certainly an alarming trend.   Here’s an outrageous story just released this past week….its headline reads:  In costly Bay Area, even six-figure salaries are considered ‘low income’“. 

Although living costs aren’t as low as they once were, according to the most recent data from, the average cost of a two-bedroom home is just $135,000, with average rentals going for a low $795 a month, which is below the national average, according to a 2015 National Apartment Report. People have a lot of disposable income and aren’t struggling to make ends meet, like they are in other cities with huge populations.

Daily Traffic And Commutes:

One of the first things that we found very refreshing here in Las Vegas is that the traffic situation is almost nonexistent in comparison to our experiences in the Bay Area and Los Angeles/Orange county.  We’ve witnessed a lot of NEW highway and roadway construction throughout the valley……due to its expanding footprint.  If you live near the beltway ring road which is the 215, you’ll be able to get to almost anywhere in the valley within 30 minutes or less.  We really appreciate the conditions of the roads and the lack of major traffic jams and ridiculous commutes.  According to INRIX Global Traffic Scorecard, California has some of the worst traffic conditions in the world.

Outdoor Activities:

If you enjoy the great outdoors, there are a lot of things to do here in Nevada.

Though the rainbow-colored neon city skyline is often thought to be one of the prettiest night skylines in the world, for those seeking beauty of a more natural variety, Vegas has a surprisingly large number of options. Lake Mead, Red Rock Canyon and Mt Charleston are all located 30 to 45 minutes away. Many national parks are also within driving distance, including the Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce and Joshua Tree.  So many things for the whole family to do.

The People:

Our personal experience here is that the go-to question upon meeting someone new in Vegas is always “Where are you from?” as most everyone here is from somewhere else. Even the wild donkeys that roam the hills behind the gated communities of Summerlin are expatriates; imported from Mexico a century ago to work in state’s silver mines. This makes Las Vegas one of the most diverse cities on the planet.

The residents here are here to make an honest living and to raise a family….we found that very heartwarming because we certainly feel the same way.  There are a lot of immigrants from Asia and eastern Europe who are all pulling in the same direction to make a better life for themselves and their families.  Las Vegas’ immigrant communities are growing and by nature they are humble hardworking people….. you don’t experience as many “want to be’s” as you would elsewhere.  The people who actually live and work here are the polar opposite of those who travel here and stay on the strip.  We really like the diverse communities and cultures here in Las Vegas….its certainly something we did not expect when we moved here.


300 days of sunshine……enough said!


We love living here, its much different (in a good way) to what we expected when we first arrived.  We love the opportunities and the different cultures here, and to be honest….we only miss our dear friends and family in California….and nothing else.

Moving just flat out STINKS!!!! We know that when you’re ready to make a move, but your stuff is staring at you in the face, silently mocking you……you just want to look the other way. Packing up all your belongings is a daunting task, but there are many ways to make your packing easier. These eight easy tips will get you ready to pack with a vengeance.


There are so many online tools that will help you get organized.  How many boxes do I need? There’s a helpful website for that.  Breakdown your packing by the room and label each box by identifying the room and the boxes general contents…..there’s a helpful website for that. Don’t mix items from different rooms in one box. To prevent miniature knickknacks and small items from being lost or mistakenly thrown out with the packing paper, wrap them in brightly-colored tissue paper.

We know it SUCKS but don’t procrastinate! This seems simple enough, but getting started can be difficult. A few weeks prior to your move, start packing several boxes a day. Begin with items that are least essential to your daily life. If you pace yourself, you will be more organized and the job won’t be so overwhelming. Make packing easier by not waiting to get started.


Label clearly. On the top and side of each box, write a general description of the contents and the room name. Use different colored markers for each room, which will provide additional clarity for you and your movers.


Be clean…….regular newspaper may bleed ink onto your possessions. Use white packing paper to wrap all items.


Use boxes designed for moving. Boxes from your local grocery or liquor stores are not always clean and might not hold the weight of the items that you will be putting in them. In addition, varying box sizes can make loading more difficult.


Know what you can’t pack. Some common household items can’t be shipped because they are hazardous. Don’t wind up on the wrong side of the law. Read our list of what you can’t put on the moving truck.


Don’t box up everything. You should personally transport heirlooms, important papers, legal documents (wills, passports. etc.), and valuables. Make packing easier by decided what doesn’t need to be packed.


How are you going to get all of your belongings from point “A” to point “B” safe and sound?  It all depends on your budget… can have a moving company pack up all of your belongings……..inventory it and move it for you.  I’ve moved many times on the company’s dime so it didn’t affect me financially.  However, it can be very expensive and somewhat intrusive because you’re having strangers pack your personal belongings and getting into your personal space.  If you’re on a tight budget and your move is somewhat local……..after you’ve pack and organized your belongings, invite your friends and family to help you load and unload your stuff.  Here’s the right way to reward your friends and family after helping you move……you certainly wouldn’t want to alienate them because you may have to move again. Your grown up kids have finally left the house so you’re thinking of downsizing or you may have to move because of some urgent reason. Or is it that you just received a new job offer in a different location that will require you to relocate? In most situations, a move is well planned and the timing is usually on your side, however, in some cases you may be require to move much sooner than you may like.

In this article, we will provide three key points to address in order to make your move a successful one.  The first two points apply regardless of when you will need to move but the last point is for the move that requires you to sell your home quickly.

How to get organized and pack your belongings

The first and the most important thing to do when you are all set to move is to sort through your belongings and to get rid of the items that are not essential. One of the advantages of moving is that you will be forced to eliminate unnecessary junk and clutter. Perhaps you can even sell some of these items on craigslist to make few extra dollars.

Now its time to pack it all up. After going through everything and eliminating those things that you do not need at your new place, it’s time to start packing them up.  Make sure that you pack up your photographs, fragile and personal items in a box, label each box and put them away. This will give you a sense of privacy and it will also prevent any additional packing by your moving company.

How to select the right moving company

There are a lot of firms that are more than ready to provide you with a fast and effective moving service. There are also many of unsavory outfits as well. Here are some tips on what you should look for when choosing a moving company………read on!


Beware of those extremely low priced companies, especially if they only provide their estimate over the phone or via the internet.

The cost of moving is based on the weight of your items and the distance of the move.  A reputable moving company will always base its cost on the weight of the items that need to be moved. The space that your items will take up in their truck doesn’t necessarily factor into their price. Stay clear of moving company that tells you otherwise.

A reputable moving company will always visit your home (prior to final movement), take a look at your belongings, checkout its condition and they’ll determine how much time will be needed to pack your things up. Their estimate will be primarily based on this visit.  Try and stay away from a moving company that tells you that they do not need to come to your house.

The federal government requires moving companies to provide you with a copy of your “Rights and Responsibilities” when you move. Their failure to do this may be a “scam alert”.

Do need to sell my house fast?

Prior to a successful move, you have to make the decision on how to sell your home.  The traditional route starts with contacting a real estate agent and having your house listed on the MLS .  The process usually goes like this: your home will be listed and you’ll have to wait for qualified buyers to look at your home and for an interested buyer to make an offer on your home.  The process doesn’t end there, if you accept the perspective buyers offer, they must qualify and obtain a mortgage on a loan they will need to buy your home unless they are able to pay for your home in cash.  The whole process of going this route which will include, an appraisal, a home inspection and closing at a title company usually takes 60 to 90 days depending on the location of the home and its current market conditions.   There are also costs that are often overlooked buy the home seller when they decide to work with a real estate agent, so be aware of these costs….check this out “HERE”.

If the timeframe we just outlined above does not conform to your schedule and plans, the question that comes into your mind is “I need to sell my house fast”. Now that you are motivated to sell your house fast, you should consider contacting a professional real estate buyer. They are investors in real estate properties. They purchase homes, they fix them up and resell them, which means they are always on the lookout for new homes to buy. They often buy homes where an owner needs to make a quick move and doesn’t have time to go through the lengthy process of selling their home through the traditional method of signing up with a realtor.  They also buy distressed properties and fixer uppers as investments to fix up and resell later. This may create a win-win situation between you and the real estate buyer. With these type of buyers, you can sell your home much quicker than you might in the current market, and get paid quickly.  This is certainly an option you may want to consider….why not contact them today, who knows, you may end up selling your house quickly.
